A Chinese Kali temple in Tangra?
The Chinese Kali Temple is located on Matheswartala Road, in Tangra, Kolkata’s historic Chinese neighbourhood. It is dedicated chiefly to Kali and Shiva, yet the setting and surrounding practices also carry traces of Kolkata’s Chinese cultural heritage. Red incense, Chinese New Year imagery, family traditions and Indo-Chinese food all belong to the story of the place. That combination makes the temple look unexpected only if Chinese community life and Hindu worship are treated as separate worlds. In Tangra, they have developed alongside one another.
Tangra grew from Kolkata’s Chinese migration
Chinese migration to Kolkata began in the late 18th century. Tangra later developed as a major Chinese settlement through shoemaking, tanning and leatherwork, followed by restaurants and community institutions. The neighbourhood also reflects relocation from central Kolkata. Its history is therefore not just about a temple appearing in an unfamiliar setting; it is about a community building a life in the city and reshaping its surroundings over time. The Chinese Kali Temple belongs to that longer neighbourhood history.
