Stand where you can safely see the steel frame rather than only the traffic. Howrah Bridge works as a cantilever: huge arms project from each bank and meet over the river, leaving the principal navigation channel free of a pier.

Pick one diagonal steel member and follow it with your eyes until it disappears into the larger truss. The bridge reads less like a single beam and more like a web of forces.
